    Description

Ernie Kovacs Signed Check to the IRS. A personal check for ,000 written to the IRS, dated October 11, 1960, and signed by Kovacs in blue ink. The memo on the check reads "Ernie Kovacs 1958 income tax liability on account". A frequent critic of the federal tax system, Kovacs owed the IRS several hundred thousand dollars in back taxes due to his simple refusal to pay, and as much as 90 percent of his earnings would be garnished as a result. Kovacs began investing his money in a convoluted series of paper corporations, with names such as The Bazooka Dooka Hicka Hocka Hookah Company, in a bid to thwart Uncle Sam. Kovacs' tax woes also affected his career to the point that he would take any work offered to him, whether or not it fit with to his style of comedy; it was his widow Edie who eventually paid off the debt, many years after his death. The check is in Excellent condition with the usual bank cancellation marks. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
